Battle Flag

The best-known Confederate flag was the Battle Flag, or "Southern Cross".  The Battle Flag was designed due to the fact that the "Stars and Bars" was so similar to the "Stars and Stripes" . This Battle Flag was agreed upon.  Other flags such as State regimental colors were used by the Confederacy on the battlefield, but the Battle Flag, although it was never officially recognized by the Confederate government, came to represent the Southern "cause" to most people. The square Battle Flag was carried by Confederate troops in the field which were the vast majority of forces under the confederacy.
Used as a navy jack at sea from 1863 onward, the rectangular Battle Flag pictured above has become the generally recognized symbol of the South. Many recognize the Battle Flag from the Dukes of Hazzard. The Battle Flag was painted on the top of their car. The Battle Flag has also appeared on several southern state flags at one time.  It continues to be a part of the Mississippi state flag.
